Using Active Directory

Here is how to use the Active Directory features:

1.       Configure a server to act as the Active Directory server on a network. You can create a fictitious domain name for the Active Directory server if needed. For example, we have a testing server that believes it is the Active Directory controller for a domain named ztestdomain.com.

2.       Modify global.asa to log into your Active Directory server. You will add these s settings:

                Application("adAccount") = "YOUR-DOMAIN\user-account-with-permission-to-read-active-directory-data"

                Application("adPassword")= "password-for the user-account"

These lines define a user account that has permissions to read the Active Directory to find a user's:

1.       Username

2.       First name

3.       Last name

4.       Email address

3.       Replace Default.asp (the page users go to log into the LMS) with ad.asp (the page that logs into Active directory and trickles user data into the LMS's database). Ad.asp does the following:

1.       Registers the user if he/she does not exist in the LMS database. This page retrieves this information from the Active Directory

1.       Username

2.       First name

3.       Last name

4.       Email address

2.       Examines all of the groups that the user belongs to. Creates those groups in the LMS if they do not exist. Adds user to these groups. Removes the user from groups that he/she no longer belongs to based on the group-information from Active Directory

3.       Assigns courses to the user when he is added to a new group

4.       Logs the user into the LMS
